Associate Priest with Permission to Officiate: Canon Alan Cross ssc

Canon Alan Cross

I was born in Stockton-on-Tees in County Durham. From this day, I have always wanted to be a Priest. Eventually, I was ordained a Deacon and Priest in the Diocese of Birmingham.

Then in 1973, I moved to St James the Great, Colchester and started my long connection with the Diocese of Chelmsford. It was in Colchester that I met Susan my future wife.

In 1977, I moved to Leigh-on-Sea to become the Vicar of St James the Great. It was here that our two children, Emma and Mark, were born.

I left Leigh-on-Sea in 1989 to become the Vicar of St Barnabas, Woodford Green. While I was in this Parish I was made a Canon of the Diocese. I became a member of the Patronage Board of the Diocese as well as being a member of the Education Board and the Board of Stewardship. I have been closely involved during my ministry with education being Chairman of the Board of Governors of schools in both my parishes, and Chairman of the Woodford Business Association.

Later, I became the Area Dean of Forward in Faith, Diocesan Chairman of the Church Union, and later one of the Trustees of the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament.

I retired in 2009 and moved back to Colchester where I received my P.T.O. to work in the Diocese of Chelmsford and am very thrilled to be based here at St James and St Paul.
